A comprehensive fire safety system from Chubb Fire, including the latest smoke detection technology and fire suppression units, is protecting the new skillsXchange Campus at Wakefield College.

Chubb Fire worked with M&E Consultants Stephen Hunt Associates to design a fully addressable fire alarm system that sends text alerts to designated mobiles informing the mobile holder (e.g the building manager) of the exact location of a fire should an alarm sound. Repeater panels on each floor allow the alarm to be re-set and the sounders silenced from any part of the building.

A series of optical detectors have been installed around the Campus that detect the first sign of a fire by regularly sampling particles of air for impurities caused by smoke. This High Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD) Technology provides the earliest warning to provide students and staff time to escape. There are also manual call points.

The skillsXchange’s IT facility has been specifically been installed with an FM200 fire suppression system. FM200 is a non-ozone depleting liquefiable clean gas that is as effective as Halon, an extinguishant used in suppression systems in the 1950s. Halon was banned because of its ozone depleting properties.

Chubb’s expertise in delivering major projects was a key factor in its appointment, as Jon Howard, Director of Estates at Wakefield College explains: “Following the multi million pound investment in this state of the art facility, it was vital that it was protected from fire with the best detection and early warning system available.
“Chubb was the obvious choice as one of the market leaders and its involvement in many high profile and equally prestigious developments and we are very pleased with the outcome.”

The £30 million skillsXchange, completed by developers Waystone earlier this year, contains new state-of-the-art provision for Hair and Beauty Therapy, IT, Construction, Motor Vehicle and Engineering.

The skillsXchange is situated on Waystone's award winning 338 acre Glasshoughton site, considered a blueprint for successful regeneration. The site of a former colliery Glasshoughton now boasts its own railway station and is home to the famous Xscape leisure complex, Junction 32 retail outlet village, a hotel, restaurants, ASDA, B&Q as well as residential and business communities.
