The competition was open to all Scout, Beaver and Cub groups across the U.K. as part of Chubb’s ongoing support for The Scout Association and its commitment to promoting fire safety amongst young people. Chubb received more than 50 entries on the theme “How to enjoy Christmas safely.”

In recognition of the 6th Devizes Scout Group’s winning entry, Jane Garland, marketing and communications manager, Chubb, presented the group with a cheque for £300 to be put toward an outdoor activity that can be enjoyed by the whole group. Two runner-up groups, the 6th Friern Barnet Scout Troop and 6th NW Beaver Scouts, received prizes of £100. All three groups’ designs were used on the Christmas e-card sent to Chubb customers across the U.K. Clare Whitehead, group Scout leader of the 6th Devizes Scout Group, was delighted that their group had won and by the Scouts’ reaction. “The boys worked on researching fire safety and the different dangers around the home at Christmas to use in their card designs,” Whitehead said. “They jumped in the air with delight when we told them the news. I think Sam was surprised that his design was chosen, and incredibly happy too. With the generous prize money we will be taking the Scouts on an outdoor adventure day. We are all incredibly excited about our day out.”

Garland said that even after 10 years of supporting Chubb’s Fire Safety Badge, the judges are always surprised by the quality of the Christmas card entries. “The competition encourages children to really think about what fire safety means at Christmas,” she said. “It is a fun way for the groups to reinforce the important fire safety messages already built into Chubb’s Fire Safety Badge, and it’s encouraging to see so many young people demonstrating such creativity. It is our hope that the knowledge they take away from these activities will help keep them and their families safe if confronted by a fire.”

Since its launch in 2004, more than 130,000 Scouts have passed the Chubb Fire Safety badge, making it one of the most popular of all scouting badges. Chubb’s partnership with The Scout Association provides educational literature and posters to more than 7,200 local Scout groups across the U.K., as well as practical support from the company’s nationwide network of offices and engineers.
